How sober living is an ongoing and often passionate debate. A single word, “God,” provides some of the biggest reasons why some people pursue life on this path. Here’s a quick look at five common reasons that people choose to live sober. The first is that sobriety is simply the right thing to do. This is the motivating force behind many living sober. It’s the sense that one’s days are numbered and there’s no “going to”putting up with.” The second reason to live sober is that it gives one more “spare time.” Not just the time to think about what one is doing, but to take up things that are personal to the person. Just as we spend our free time in ways that support our families, our jobs, and our community, so too should we put time and effort into all the things that are “meant” for us. There are some other reasons, too. People who choose to live sober want to do things that are natural, rather than unnatural. They also want to avoid doing things that are prescribed by a doctor, because they prefer natural remedies. These basic reasons are good ones. If we look closely, however, we find that these are merely excuses and many of us use them as we try to be the one who makes up the rules about “what is right and what is wrong.” But, here’s a question. I’ll bet you that a large percentage of the people who answer “Yes” to the question, “How sober living is right for me?” have had to struggle with addiction or mental illness. Maybe they want to be able to speak freely. Maybe they want to be able to practice their religion without feeling judged. Or, maybe they simply want to be happy. And, many of them, you might argue, are fighting hard to get there. And so, if the desire is so strong, then the results will be well worth the effort. So, do you have the desire to live sober? Are you willing to put in the effort? If so, then you have the right reasons to live sober. If you’ve found new reasons for wanting to live sober, then so be it. Seek the help you need. Maybe you’ve already tried alcohol. The bottom line is this: If you truly have found your answer, the only thing left for you to do is to commit yourself. But, first you must be honest with yourself and find out why you’re seeking this answer.
